What's so fun about 'Grand Theft Auto'?

advertisement

In "GTA IV," the main character is Niko Bellic, a former war criminal from Eastern Europe lured to the fictional Liberty City by his petty-thief cousin. Bellic does plenty of despicable things during his rise to the top of the underworld, but he's also a multi-layered, sympathetic character with a noble motive.

What is it about "GTA" games that appeal to gamers? Why is it fun for otherwise law-abiding citizens to roll hookers, shoot at cops and steal helicopters?

Msnbc.com would like Newsviners to tell us what you think of "GTA" games. Do you think it feels good to play the bad guy?

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

The fact that this game has sold 500000000 Copies already , to me is an obvious sign of what is wrong with your whole society , just something else to completely de sensitize you from the violence that is in this world every day already. America you are truly going to be the next society to fall under your own love of everything VIOLENT

People are morons. Funny how they say video games ruin our kids yet there are TONS of movies with violence in them that were out long before video games not to mention you can see dead dudes on the news. Hell you can see stuff like that in books and on the net. People flip out and shoot other people without video games to help them along. In truth I don't think the video game causes the violence so much unless its with very young kids who are impressionable and who SHOULD NOT BE PLAYING THIS GAME ANYWAY. Lazy stupid ass parents who don't read the game rating are very much at fault. Some idiot parent almost bought his Kid one of the GTA games. Didn't even look at it. I had to almost chew him out to get him to look at it. I was polite but I wanted to smack him. See people you want to blame game makers cause your too lazy to do the research. Maybe you shouldn't have kids if your not willing to put in the time and effort to find out about the games they play, the shows they watch and what and who is influencing them. If your not willing to do that then please don't breed. You are doing your children and other people a disservice by not finding out about these things. Secondly who the hell are you to say an adult can't get these games anymore? Saying underage kids can't get them is one thing but I'm a 31 year old adult and I will get whatever kind of violence, sex or swearing video games I want.

Other problems are idiot politicians who have no idea what the game is really like. They have not played it or researched it beyond what little info they scrape up to use for their own political agenda to get votes. Sad. So basically they use a smokescreen of violence in video games affecting kids as a excuse to trample on parts of the Constitution. Funny how people say Bush does that then turn around and vote for someone else who is doing the same thing just more subtly.

So why don't we just ban ANYTHING violent? No more movies, TV shows, or even news cause a kid might see a war on the news and think its "kewl". *rolls eyes* Lets also not let them go outside cause ANYONE out there could influence them to be a murderer, psycho, rapist, criminal or whatever else you can think of. Here's a little fact you parents don't get. Unless you act like those whacko polygamists in the news your kid IS going to be influenced by outside things. It's your job to figure out what he or she is getting into and to make sure they know right from wrong. It is not your job to tell other people who are old enough to know right from wrong that they cannot buy violent video games.

Another thing I saw is people saying this game "teaches kids to commit murders". O RLY? ACTUALLY CSI and shows like that are FAR more informative on how to kill someone AND GET AWAY WITH IT! Walking into the street and blazing away with a gun is not a very effective teaching method for murder. However shows like CSI show how murders have gotten away with killing others AND the mistakes that get them caught. Cops have blamed that show for helping murders yet some moronic politician who just wants votes to get elected will jump on the anti-video game wagon if he thinks it will help his stance, or if he really is against violence in the media AT LEAST PRESENT YOUR ARGUMENT MORE INTELLIGENTLY. The claim that video games are the cause of violence is so hypocritical because there are tons of movies with people shooting each other with guns LONG before GTA or video games of any kind came out. Violence has been a part of human culture for ages and people have been killing each other in anger for a very long time, it did not start with video games and not to mention murders are sensationalized. Not many people are as interested in good acts as someone going crazy with a gun. At least the ratings point to this. Sure people like a feel good story but lots more people tune in to tragedies. Any fool can "learn to commit murder" by just watching the news if the criteria for committing murder is to simply find a gun and blaze away until you yourself are gunned down. I bet a lot of parents are from the 50s era or so. What about those violent westerns with gunfights in the middle of town? Isn't that basically GTA in Western setting? What about WWII movies or other war movies? See? Your logic is so faulty here its laughable. Oh or what about Rock and Roll? It's the music of the DEVIL! What about when Blues music came out and African Americans were playing it? I remember reading about that before and how it was all sinful and bad. Please. You people are just trying as bad now as those people were then. I think I just shoot your arguments full of holes. I didn't even need a gun to do it and I still have lots more ammo left.

Dudes, if you don't like killing, drugs and prostitution, then freakin GET OFF MY PLANET!!!

Games are based on life, not the other goddamn way around. Whoever thinks so HAS to realize that video games have been around for approximately 0.001% of man's existance on this Earth and what has he just simply been compLETELY FRIGGING KNOWN FOR DOING FOR AS LONG AS EVERYBODY CAN REMEMBER? That's right morons: sex, drugs and killing.

Honestly, somebody's gonna claim GTA is responsible for drugs, prostitution and killing? Or was that always here? For ever and ever and ever ago?

GodDAMN, I tell you what breeds violence. You people.

I belive that this series of games provides yet another way of releasing tension from our rule bound, law-abiding lives and reverting back to a natural way of simply DOING something, as apposed to considering the morals. This sort of thing applies to almost anything considered exciting, and I mean ANYTHING.
      For Example:

-> One would not normaly tackle and stamp on someone, and certainly not just to grab and run off with whatever they were holding...
....yet this the main object and action that takes place in popular tackling sports like Football and Rubgy.

->One would not leap from a plane in flight, and risk their life...
......yet activities like skydiving and base jumping are immensly popular and enjoyable.

->One would ride in a vehicle doing loops and 69 Degree drops at 120 MPH...
.......yet roller coasters are very fun, and quite common.

And Thusly the same applies to GTA; and it becomes one of the many things that keeps our contemperary society safer.
      Think about it;
before television, modern sports and vehicles, and before our modern laws, history was a very chaotic and bloody time, as our natural strive for danger excitment and fear cased us to do irrational things.
And now, we have ways of satifying such a natural instinct without doing such things.
GTA is perhaps the best means of such, as, whilst it replicates the danger and Violence as best as technology can, one is still not doing anything harmful and illegal.
Thusly, GTA is a vent for anger, and the aforementioned natural instinct.

BTW GamerGuy31 I agree with you completley. The present day is the past in a different format. Westerns are now action movies. Rock n Roll is now, well, any 'immoral' music. The Cold war/Vietnam is now violence on CNN. Adventure and acton comice are now such video games as GTA.

You people do realise most of these games start off as the main character trying to change and be good ,but some how is pulled into the life of killing, prositution, cop killing, racial battles, drug dealing, political corruption, and theift. As for features of GTA 4, features such as beating prostitiutes and podestrians with bats, well those are add ons you could by the game and drive around, deliver pizza, be an ambulance driver, taxi driver, a cop, or even a fireman. As for you parents who think this video game is what is causeing all the violence in our world think again becuase we had violence before the GTA series came out, for a matter of fact we had violence before any violent video game, movie, or songs came out. So if you want a world here's an idea parent your dam kids instead of finding excuses to blame your lack of parenting on.
