WALL-E, a robot left to clean up a trashed planet Earth, is rolling into theaters and into the hearts of moviegoers everywhere as he chases his love, the svelte EVE, across the galaxy. If the movie is the success Disney-Pixar hopes it will be, the star of the show will join a long list of memorable robots that have graced the silver screen.
Msnbc.com would like to know if Newsviners think any other robots (such as the "Westworld" robot or David in "A.I." ) deserve a spot on the list. What do you think is the most memorable movie 'bot of all time?
What about H.A.L. from 2001 Space Odyssey - isn't he worth mentioning?
HAL was a computer, not a bot.
How about the IRON GIANT?
I think HAL qualifies as a robot, but his body was the entire Discovery. Not human shaped, but no less a robot.
I loved Iron Giant, Johnny 5 and what about the robot in FLUBBER??
HAL is a computer but with ability to control various functions of the ship. Thus, technically, a robot. I agree, HAL should be on the list. Johnny 5 should most definitely be on the list. Did nobody seek input before publishing this article?
HAL was a computer not a robot.
HAL was a great find, #5 from Short Circut was good too. "Danger Will Robinson!" the robot from Lost in Space is a find too.
As for those Fembots being #1? They don't even belong on the list. They were no more memorable than any other joke from either of the sequils. The Sharks with laser beams were more memorable.
If we're to use this stream of logic, then the Enterprise's computer from the Star Trek movies would count as a robot, too. No, I'm of the mindset that HAL, while a remarkable computer, doesn't qualify as a robot.
How about #5 from Short Circuit. In my opinion, the funniest robot in movie history!
You betcha. Johnny 5 is the BEST!
Absolutely! When I read the article I thought for sure Johnny 5 would be there. He's my all time favorite bot :)
I cannot believe they left Johnny 5 off of the list...the Wall-E 'bot looks like a clone of him!
I'm not sure I'm with ya on H.A.L., but where's Johnny 5 from Short Circuit? He's clearly an influence on WALL-E!
What about Marvin, the Paranoid Robot from 'Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy'?
Marvin from Hitchhikers... absolutely! HAL was technically a computer, but he should have made the list nonetheless.
"Open the pod bay doors, HAL."
"I'm sorry Dave, I cannot do that."
"What's the problem?"
"I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do." ......
what about the robot on Lost in Space the tv show and the menacing robot in the movie version
Absolutely! How could they omit Will Robinson's best friend, and the constant adversary and straight man of Dr. Smith? The Lost in Space Robot deserves to be in that list more than the Fembots.
David from A.I. absolutely needs to be on the list.
And what about Rosie the Robot, from The Jetsons?
I was surprised the robot from Lost in Space wasn't on the list. Rosie should definitely been on the list as well.
I agree, "B-9" the Lost in Space Robot should be on the list; he at least had a sense of humour.
I was thinking the same thing about the "Lost in Space" robot but then I relized this was movie robots not TV robots.
Lost in Space was made into a movie. Robot should most certainly count! Rosie (Jetsons) should at least get honorable mention.
I feel the same way about Lost in Space's Robot. I don't think the movie did very well. I didn't even know they did the movie 'til a couple of weeks ago when A&E (I think) did a Lost in Space special. Since they specified "movie" robots, that might be why Robot was overlooked.
I can remember my mom using Robot to get me to practice my flute (I hated the flute - wanted to be a drummer) - when I'd hit a sour note, she'd start waving her arms around and yelling "THAT DOES NOT COMPUTE!"
Ohhhkey, snapping out of my time warp...my top 3 are Robot, R2D2, and C3PO
The Robot from Lost in Space and Rosie from the Jetsons are great bots, but I think this is only a list of robots from movies, not from TV shows. Now, Robot from the movie Lost in Space could rank in there. While he's not exactly the same as in the series, he had the same personality.
i agree! Johnny 5 has to be on te list! Wall-E looks like a shorter version of him!
I thought the same thing when I saw the trailers. So if Wall-E is the inspiration for Johnny-5 and starts the list, then shouldn't Johnny-5 himself be on the list? I think he absolutely should be!
Plus the Lost In Space robot. What with the syndication and movie he's been on the screen more than several of the bots that did make the list.
What happened to Cherry 2000, The "Lost In Space" robot, Johnny 5, and the Stepford wives?
Danger Will Robinson!!! Ya. That one.
If only more people saw The Iron Giant. That is the robot of robots and an animated classic by Pixar's Brad Bird. The Iron Giant should be on the list !
Oooh good one. I forgot about him. Now that I think about it - Transformers should be on the list too.
I have to give a vote for Marvin the Paranoid ANDROID, though I prefer the BBC series version.
From "The Black Hole" we get three robots, B.O.B., V.I.N.C.E.N.T., and Maximillian, who I spent many hours modeling out of Legos.
Where is maximillian from the black hole?
and then the lovable little flying bots from "batteries not included"
Im with the little robots from batteries not included. But I have to wonder about K-9 from Dr. Who. That was always my favorite !
Yep, JOHNNY 5 must be added. HAL doesn't qualify.
Second nomination goes to either Huey or Dewey from Running Silent.
Well, I've got to mention K-9 from Doctor Who! I've always wanted one for myself!
Plus, I do agree with the recommendation of old B.O.B. , V.I.N. Cent, & Maximilian from The Black Hole.
What about Huey, Dewey, and Louie from "Silent Running".
Seconded. I was going to mention Huey, Dewey and Louie myself, as Silent Running is one of my most favorite films from the great run of dystopian science fiction films of the early '70s...Soylent Green, The Omega Man, Dark Star and so forth.
'nother vote for huey dewey and louie!
Another vote for Huey, Dewey, and Louie....
Huey, Dewey and Louei, careful they cheat at poker.
Absolutely the robot from the 60's TV series "Lost In Space". How could you possibly have left him out of the list?! That's a no-brainer.
The lost in space robot was already mentioned, but the show wasn't
Like I stated earler, the Lost in Space robot was a TV robot
Definitely have to add Johnny 5 and the robot from "Lost In Space" - classics!
Oh COME ON! Johnny #5 IS alive.... One of the funniest and lovable robots aside from R2-D2 and c3po
HELLO!!! JOHNNY 5 IS THE BEST. How did he get left off the list but the fembots made it?
Although not technically a robot..What about Woody Allen as the butler in "Sleeper"? Funny!!
One worth mentioning as oft overlooked would be the different versions of k-9 from the original 'Dr. Who.' Or perhaps Davros, the Daleks and the Cybermen? Also from the same series?
I know the film got panned but I was one of the few who really loved it--The Bicentennial Man. Robin Williams made a great robot!
Galatea - definitely the sexiest 'bot in films - from the same film!
Add me as the umpteenth person who feels #5 (IS ALIVE!) should be on this list. Especially as WALL-E's progenitor.
Fembots?! Really?! And Ahhnold shouldn't qualify either since he doesn't LOOK like a robot.
Disney just shortened Johnny 5 from Short Circuit and called him Wall E. He is a miniature version of Johnny 5. KO derF?
Johnny 5. Wall E is clearly ripped from him, from his triangular treads to binocular eyes.
