Movie robots to be remembered

advertisement

WALL-E, a robot left to clean up a trashed planet Earth, is rolling into theaters and into the hearts of moviegoers everywhere as he chases his love, the svelte EVE, across the galaxy. If the movie is the success Disney-Pixar hopes it will be, the star of the show will join a long list of memorable robots that have graced the silver screen.

Msnbc.com would like to know if Newsviners think any other robots (such as the "Westworld" robot or David in "A.I." ) deserve a spot on the list. What do you think is the most memorable movie 'bot of all time?

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Definitely, how could they skip Johnny 5 (is ALIVE!) he has to be my favorite robot ever... (both movies). Bicentennial Man was pretty good, but I think the robots on A.I. were the best! Specially Gigolo Joe (Whatta'y know) by Jude Law. Someone please tell me you remember this one!

OH YES, A.I.: Artificial Intelligence is full of awesome and memorable robots! What a great little robot David was. And you're right, Gigolo Joe was great too. Now THAT was a truly great under-rated and under-appreciated film.

The idea for the fembots originally came from "The Bionic Woman" TV series. There are too many robots not mentioned to mention, but definitely HAL and SAL, Huey, Louie and Dewey from "Silent Running,"

If we have Fembots wouldn't we have to include the Replicants from Blade Runner?

Johnny 5. I remember seeing the first Wall-E cardboard standup and thinking that they were remaking Short Circuit as an animated flick.

Agreed, No. 5 should be on the list.

But let's not forget Twiki and Dr. Theopolis, the Cylons (old and new), and the Heartbeeps robots. The latest re-creations of Asimov's robots (Bicentennial Man, I Robot) were also well done.

But these deserve a real mention: Roy Batty, Leon, Zhora, Pris, and of course Rachael Tyrell (Do you like our owl?).

We'll save the Deckard question for another thread.

Alsatia, played by Joan Cusack in the 1992 movie Toys which starred Robin Williams. Alsatia was a silly, but lovable character who not until late in the movie was discovered to be a robot.

Remeber these are Movie Robots- Red Dwarf, Buck Rogers, Lost In Space, Gigantor don't really fit the catagory.

That said I still want to nominate the robot(s) from the Looney Tunes 'House of the Future' cartoons (they were made for the big screen). You remember all the robots that did the household work. And there was the stick-figure robot with the dust pan at it's feet and would rush out of the broom closet whenever something broke in the house.

                                                    (small screen robots we've missed...
