The White House said on Wednesday it was "despicable" that American International Group Inc. executives spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on a posh California retreat just days after getting a federal bailout.
Msnbc.com would like to know whether the action of these AIG executives makes Newsviners rethink whether the government should have bailed out the world's biggest insurer.
We the people should take our country back and put them all in jail starting with BUSH
I agree, they all should go in the jail along with any elected official in congress and senate who are part of it.
I agree totally. Bush has been the biggest disappointment, you can not trust anyone, they can talk all they want, but it's the doing, that does not get done. I have a good friend that tried to commit suicide last night, because he lost his job, is this what we have to face, they say it will only get worse. GOD help us little people!
Are you crazy? You are talking about lacking out half of the country! It costs a lot of money to keep anyone in jail. I am not paying for that! Can we shoot them?
Obviously, with this...outrageous behavior, and complete and total contempt for the American taxpayer, and Congress bailing their silly butts out...the answer is a resounding no.
A pity we didn't say no beforehand.
Yes, it's despicable. And wrong. And illegal. Etc. Name calling is all fine and dandy, but what are they going to do about it? Jail time? Force the parachute recipients to pay back the money? What? We need accountability. We need consequences. We need them to reap what they sowed. We need someone with the b*lls to DO something right and stand up and say this must be done. You screwed up, here are your consequences.
Let's see if that happens; then I'll be impressed.
This is an absolute abuse of power. Everyone in a managment level at AIG should be fired and investigated by the FBI. The American people are ready to rebell against corporate greed and stupidity in Congress. It is now time that the American people take back the country and hold everyone accountable from the top down.
This country was founded by revolution, perhaps WE THE PEOPLE need to take control of the country once again by the same way. Perhaps voting ALL of the incumbents out of office regardless would send a wake up call. I've written to all of my congressional folks and have, by golly, received automated relpies from 2. I wrote the Presidential Candidates as well, and am now getting money requests from my new BFF Joe (Biden) and a big thank you from Senator Obama for joining the movement... not a word about the reason I wrote. Of course nothing from McBush. I'm kind of looking at voting for Barr.
Congress passed this bailout for self-serving reasons and not for the welfare of the country. I could care less with Waxman's lip service. I want to know what lawmakers plan on doing with the AIG executives? A crook that calls himself a CEO or one that calls himself/herself a politician is still a crook. I hope that when Americans go to the polls they take a long look at their incumbents before they cast their vote.
Despicable, disgusting, sicking. Fire all that were involved and throw the one(s) in jail that are responsible for this travesty Find a way to make them to pay it all back.
According to the news AIG put out - whether it's true or not, we'll see - but Chairman and CEO Edward M. Liddy sent a letter today to U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson to clarify the event, mischaracterized as an “Executive Retreat,” saying it was held by one of AIG’s insurance subsidiaries for independent life insurance agents, not for AIG employees. These agents were top business producers for the company, and of the more than 100 attendees, only 10 were employees of the AIG subsidiary who were there to represent their company. No AIG executives from headquarters attended. The meeting was planned months before the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s loan to AIG.
In his letter, Mr. Liddy assured Secretary Paulson that AIG now faces very different challenges, and “that we owe our employees and the American public new standards and approaches.” Mr. Liddy assured Secretary of the Treasury Paulson that AIG is “reevaluating the costs of all aspects of our operations in light of the new circumstances in which we are all operating.”
Mr. Liddy concluded, that “AIG is focused on doing what is necessary to address our capital structure, repay the Fed credit facility and emerge as a healthy global insurer. In the meantime, our insurance businesses continue to operate normally and satisfy the needs of our policy holders.”
Well that's a nice little piece of BS. I think the only way these jerks are going to change their ways is if they have plenty of time to think about it - like in a federal prison. Sure the massages aren't as good, but everyone needs to make sacrafices.
I am so thoroughly disgusted I cannot even see straight.
I am a business owner and I have gone through all my
savings, 401 and everything to keep my company in
business. Why do these executives get to keep this
illgotten money, bonuses, etc, when we are bailing
them out.
ROTTEN, GREEDY, BLOOD-SUCKING BASTARDS---KILL THEM ALL---DEATH FROM ABOVE---LET GOD SORT THEM OUT!!!!!!!!!!
This is the ultimate "thumbing their noses" at the US citizen's after OUR money bailed them out! president-select bush and all the rest of the crooks at aig and wall streets should be jailed. And not in those minimum security places with the little rope marking the boundaries of the facility. REAL JAIL FOR THE REAL CROOKS!
This is outrageous!! It is like AIG just threw "@!$%#" right at our face. Shameless!! I'm practically shaking with anger.
We should get the $440M back. Stop the $1M/month consultant fee to this ex-CEO right now! Go after these CEOs and the people involved.
I think the fact that anyone from AIG had a luxury weekend is just what the middle class is furuious about! They hide behind the idea that it wasn't the "financial Products Department" that spent the money..... who cares...... they are all the same company, and this is just the kind of abuse that has gotten us into this mess!
I agree with Barak Obama.....FIRE the CEO's and repay the money! NOW!!!
I totally agree with you.
Actually to clarify, Obama gets his contribution dollors from the people who support him, not lobbiest or CEO's. That is why it is called the grass-roots campaign. Normal people give money, he even turned down government dollars to aid his campaign.
I do agree that politicians are in fact that, politicians and they will not meet all of thier promises but don't you at least want to try for a change to better our social class? I do, even though it is against everything that I have been taught, preached or down right barraded because of. I am switching this year knowing that there may be at least a small glimmer of hope that the greed will at least subside in our government.
Very, very disappointed. Why are we, the "middle-class" people, all paying for the luxury of those unethical, money-sucking executives?
This is Bush's way of elminating the "middle class" and making America a 2 class system, the very rich and the rest of us.
Lets get this straight right now, nothing is going to be done to these people.
We the people need to find out what congress people have a hand in there pockets and just replace them.
as far as AIG guys
this is how to take care of them
any one that has stock sell it, anyone who uses them for there insurance or anything else they do, go with someone else. if they have no business than they can't do business. then the american people have the control and that business will go under anyway.
Do you mean to tell me that no one saw this coming? These people don't change and we are dummies for letting them do this to us ----- again. These people have mismanaged and misused taxpayer funds and should be tried as extortionists but they are part of the "good 'ole boy " system and will get nothing but a slap on the wrist. They need to be made as examples so the next guys will think about how they are screwing us BEFORE they do it.
No, not any of them should of been bailed out. The government should of bailed the people out of this mess. Then these companies could of waited for the effects to trickle down to them. Now we are no better off. The poor get poorer and the rich get the spa treatment.
By the way, I live in the town with the bridge to nowhere. Don't believe her, she didn't give any money back. She took the money and is building a smaller bridge over the Knik Arm, to shorten her transit to work in Anchorage! But she funded the road that connects to the bridge to nowhere, with that same money she said she gave back. This was an economical disaster to southern S.E. Alaska.
She's changing the old guard of oil, and Sen. Stevens was just in the way, ya think. We wonder how Chaney is connected? V.P.'s seem to have the oil power, if she gets her way.
Now we have an economy and road to nowhere. Thanks Gov. How does the real issues stay out of the news? Beware of V.P.'s connect to oil! Who's their daddy? And she thinks Obama is connected. Right. The accusers are always the guilty ones.

Absolutely not. Look at what all of this so called "bailing out" has gotten us. 85 billion for bailing out AIG. 45 billion for bailing out Bear Stearns. God knows how many billion or even trillion it will cost us for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Now we are also saddled with the 700 Billion bailout package along with the STUPID 120 billion plus sweetners they had to add to get the damn thing to pass. What has happened? Absolutely nothing positive. The markets have continued to fall, the credit markets have remained frozen, the worldwide recession has worsened, and all we have to show as ordinary taxpayers is a whole hell of a trillion more dollars of DEBT!! WE NEED CHANGE!!! Look at your choices in November and think very hard of what is at stake......
...not only bailing out AIG was a bad idea, but the new CEO, Ed Liddey, is the same guy that sat on the board of Sears,Allstate,3m, and Goldman Sachs. He is currently being sued, in Federal Court, for breaking agent contracts at Allstate. He stripped agent employees of their company benefits and forced them into signing away their rights to sue the company, or face termination. See:
Does the tax payer want this guy calling the shots with their tax dollars?
All these crooks should go to the jail along with any elected offecial from both congress and senate associated with this scam.
I am totally outraged by the conduct of these executives. As usual, it's the middle class American that has to foot the bill, while the fat cats just get fatter and richer. I worry about feeding my family, affording gas to drive to work, and paying my bills, while these people worry about should they get a facial or a full body massage. They should be forced to pay restitution. I thought this country was "Of the people, for the people and by the people"? Our forefather would be rolling over in their graves if they saw where this country was at. I love this country, but hate the way the government is running it into the ground.
Bailout should never had been gone through.
Now we have 2 presidential idiots (running) supporting said bailout.
Why not make the banks rewrite all those mortgages at 5% and get rid of the ARM?
Where, when and how do the regular people benefit from this?
ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! This is insanity at it's finest! Do ya think the fed would bail me out and then let me go to a spa??? Fat chance. These AIG execs should be in jail and the company needs to figure it out just as we as individuals do if we make bad decisions! Grow up AIG!
I don't know about anyone else but I feel violated, they should be sent to jail for rape of the American people and what are we going to do about it? let them get away with this or stand our ground and raise hell? People it's time for us to stand up and tell these smug bastard we aren't taking this anymore, our lives are just as important if not more so.
These crooks make Enron execs look like kindergarteners. How did Sarbanes-Oxley NOT prevent this from happening? These theives need to pay back their ill-gotten gains and spend time in jail.
Why not have a Public Hanging for sentencing the CEO's and the corruption on Wall Street... These individuals committed FRAUD and have destroyed millions of Americans lives and have almost collapsed the American Economy out of GREED. Confiscate all their assets distribute the assets to pay the American people back. Prison terms are too cushy for these individuals but, a Good Public Hanging will make a statement to the rest of them. We have the Death Penalty for murderers... why not call this TREASON and put these individuals to rest permanently for their CRIME has all but, destroyed so many lives.
On this subject the Gross consumption of these individuals show they've learned NOTHING from their past mistakes... taking a weekend retreat at a spa for almost a half a million dollars... Boot them out!
Hangin' is too good for these crooks.
