After droves of frazzled customers flooded online forums complaining about their Zunes freezing up, Microsoft confirmed Wednesday that the 30-gigabyte device was, in fact, troubled with hardware issues.
Have you encountered any technical problems with your Zune 30? When did the issues crop up? How did you try to unfreeze your player? Any luck?
This may be related but my Toshiba Gigabeat T400 appears to have done the same thing. (stuck on startup screen) Any other toshiba owners havt this problem?
Happy New Year
I admit, I was freakin' (irrate) when this happened as i purchased mine used and would have had no recourse but to seek out other alternatives for a fix (pulling the back and uplugging the battery was going to be the LAST resort). I read enough articles that MS assured that all would be well after 12pm 01/01/09. my 30G was froze up just like the rest. i JUST plugged mine into my pc to charge (as i forgot and left my dock at work) and all appears to be well. AGAIN, i purchased mine used and i have NEVER had any problems until this little 24 hr bug. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
Lets try this again, and i apolgize if i have created a double post but anyway.....i admit, i was freakin' (irrate) to find my 30G froze up too, and perhaps more so as mine was purchased used so i would have had no recourse other than to seek out alternatives for a fix (....tearing the back off to unplug the battery was going to be my LAST resort). I read enough articles that repeated MS asurring all that was required was to wait until after 12pm 01/01/09. I did. I JUST started charging my Z and all is good. my music plays and all appears to be intact. AGAIN, my Zune was a used unit and based on how long that ive had mine, i assume it was an 06 model, and i have NEVER had any problems until this little 24hr bug came along. no big deal. im up and running again.
Happy New Year and happy zuning
...and to the inconsiderate apple lovers, eat it.
I'm happy to see all of the Zune lovers out there freaking out when this time-bug crippled our Zune 30s. I though a virus had infected my Z until last night when I saw the articles on the Internet. I am also glad to be up an running again, fully intact, with no loss of songs, videos, nor settings! While MS was right about the fix (waiting until today), I hope they fix this before next leap year...
i got my zune 2 years ago for christmas i never had a problem with it untill my mom bought one for her self and microsoft had an update for it so i updated mine and then mine started to freez up on the logo screen or when it did decide to work it would only play one album and one song over and over again. then one night i had mine charging on my desk over night the next day i grab it to go to school and the screen was craked and it would only play the last song i had listend to befor charging it.
has any one else had this problem with thier screen craking while chargning?
Yes, mine froze also on the 31st--I thought maybe it just died until I read the news the next day and found out about everyone else's. I sure hope they find a fix. I have both the I touch and the Zune and enjoy them both. I am an Apple fan, but I have never had any problems with my Zune in the 2 years I have had it. I don't think it's an inferior product, but Microsoft is really going to lose a great deal of respect and business if they can't come up with a solution that doesn't cost us any money.
I still have not been able to get my Zune to work. The only thing my display shows is a battery with an exclamation point inside it. How long do I have to wait until the battery goes completely dead so I can recharge it?
The problem was with the source code for the internal clock -- the programming contained a bad "if" statement. Basically, the clock would count the number of days remaining in the year, and if the number of days was greater than 365, the Zune had two choices -- it could either add one to the year, or, if it was a leap year, not do so. If the number of days was greater than 366, the Zune would add one to the year anyways. Since 2008 was a leap year, December 31 was day #366.
Thus begins the problem with the code -- there were instructions on what to do if there were greater than 365 days, and if there were greater than 366 days, but not if there were exactly 366 days. The Zune was stuck. They started working again on January 1 because that was, according to the Zune, day #367.
Since the clock codes are written by different teams for each Zune model as a form of redundancy, only the 30GB Zunes exhibited this error.
Your players should be fine now. If it's still not working, you should turn it off and charge it fully before turning it back on. Good luck!
My Zune came back to life as expected - thanks to Microsoft for the quick evaluation of the problem. I still think this player is the best investment I've ever made, much better than the I-Pod. Thanks!
Fully discharging it would work if I then charged it with another source. But when I try to sync ( to add new songs), it would go back to the frozen state.
My 30gb zune actually messed up in the beginning of december of 08. I was sitting in 5th hour at school I turned it back on and then out of nowhere it reset, when it was finished it said -on your computer open zune software and connect your zune and restore the devise firmware. what the hell is going on here?
